Overview

On this page, we introduce linear systems in two variables, and how to find solutions of these systems through graphing.

Basic Learning Objectives

These are the tasks you should be able to perform with reasonable fluency when you arrive at your next class meeting. Important new vocabulary words are indicated in italics.

  • Understand how to recognize linear equations and distinguish them from non-linear equations.
  • Graph a linear system of two equations in two variables.

Advanced Learning Objectives

In addition to mastering the basic objectives, here are the tasks you should be able to perform after class, with practice:

  • Solve a linear system of two equations with two variables by graphing it and reading the solution from the graph.
  • Recognize when a linear system of two equations with two variables has no solutions from the graph.

To prepare for class

  • Watch the following video (by Khan Academy) which reviews the notion of a linear equation, and shows an example of graphing a system of two equations:

  • Watch the following video (by MyWhyU) which introduces the concept of a system of two linear equations in two variables:

After class

  • Watch the following video (by patrickJMT) which shows an example of solving a linear system with two variables by graphing:

  • Watch the following video (by Mathispower4u) which shows what happens when attempting to solve a linear system with no solutions by graphing:
